🌟 Course Introduction

The Cambridge IGCSE English Language course is built around a clear set of Assessment Objectives that help students grow into precise, confident communicators.

In Reading, students learn to understand written texts, summarise key ideas, and analyse how writers create effects, skills that the syllabus highlights as central to strong performance. As they move through the course, they become increasingly adept at recognising perspectives, evaluating opinions, and selecting information for a specific purpose—abilities that not only strengthen exam technique but also build sharper critical thinking.

The Writing objectives guide students to express ideas with clarity, organise arguments effectively, and adapt tone and style for different audiences, supported by a growing command of vocabulary, grammar, and structure. Through purposeful practice with real‑world forms such as reports, articles, persuasive pieces and narratives, students learn to communicate with accuracy and impact.

Together, these Assessment Objectives create a structured, empowering pathway—one that develops independence, fluency, and confidence, giving parents the reassurance that every lesson is rooted in internationally recognised standards.

🎯Course Outline:

Paper 1: Reading (50%)

Paper 1 tests students’ ability to understand and analyse unseen modern texts. According to the syllabus, candidates must demonstrate:

• Understanding of written texts, including meanings of words and phrases in context.

• Ability to select and summarise relevant ideas for a specific purpose.

• Analysis and evaluation of how writers present facts, ideas, opinions and perspectives.

• Recognition of language and stylistic features, including figurative devices and how they create effects on the reader.

  
  

  These skills align closely with the Reading Assessment Objectives laid out in the syllabus, which emphasise comprehension, inference, analysis, and evaluation of writers’ choices.

  
  

  Paper 1 typically includes:

• Short-answer comprehension questions

• Analysis of writer’s techniques

• A summary/transformative task requiring concise selection of information

Paper 2: Directed Writing and Composition (50%)

Paper 2 tests students’ ability to write for different purposes, audiences, and forms, as required by the syllabus. Students must show:

• Clear and effective communication, expressing what is thought, felt, or imagined.

• Well-organised and coherent writing, including logical sequencing and developed ideas.

• Adaptation of tone, style and register, depending on the task (e.g., report, article, letter, speech).

• Accurate and controlled use of language, including grammar, punctuation and varied vocabulary.

  
  

  These skills reflect the Writing Assessment Objectives, which highlight crafting purposeful writing, demonstrating accuracy, and shaping language to suit audience and form. 

Paper 2 typically contains two sections:

1.      Directed Writing – responding to ideas from a text and transforming them into a new format while maintaining clarity, purpose, and tone.

2.      Composition – either

o   Descriptive or narrative writing, showing creativity and language control, or

o   Discursive or argumentative writing, presenting viewpoints with structure and coherence.

First Series and Homework 

The first sequence of lessons will build a strong foundation in persuasive and argumentative writing, giving students a clear understanding of how to structure arguments, integrate evidence effectively, anticipate and handle counter‑arguments or points of information, and shape tone to suit different audiences. We will work our way through letters, speeches, reports and articles. Each week, we will carry out a deep analysis of one carefully selected model text, allowing students to see high‑quality writing in action and to internalise the techniques they will later apply. 

Homework will be set after every lesson and each piece will be marked using Cambridge‑style criteria so that students receive precise, actionable targets for improvement.
